Garbage Carts/Bins: Placement, Responsibility. Let’s avoid fines…

Everyone who has a water bill from CBU gets sanitation services (trash and recyclables) through their utility account. This applies to almost everyone, and the bins magically appear at your home. A very few units have dumpsters. This does not apply to you.

These bins are yours to use and to take care of… and any issues with them are between you and CBU.

Where can you keep them? Beside or behind the house

LOCATION: TRASH CARTS MUST BE KEPT NEATLY ON THE SIDE OR REAR OF THE HOUSE or at a location approved by Elkins Apartments. They may not be kept on the front of the home, in flower beds, or other areas clearly visible from the primary street.
TRASH CARTS may only be curbside during pickup.
ALL TRASH AND RECYCLABLE MATERIALS ARE TO BE PLACED IN DESIGNATED RECEPTACLES (NOT IN THE HOUSE OR ON THE FRONT PORCH!)

What if I don’t? Up to $50 or more per day!

You may be charged , by us, by CBU, or both, a fine of $50 per day or more for violation of any of these.

Call Public Works 812.331.6410 to verify when trash pick up and recycling days are for your address. The city also has a tool for looking it up by address. A lot of trash? Bloomington has private haulers who will come by and get the whole load.

What about recycling?

You usually also get a recycle bin. Break down boxes. And load up the bins. Be enviro-friendly! Too much? You can also check out the Monroe County Recycling Centers. Great place. Easy drop off!
