Moving Out, Part 1: The Basics

Posted on July 16, 2015

Ready to move out? Already moved out? Here’s the first in our multipart series on making you move go smooth!

Moving out, Part 1: An Overview. Look for Part 2—What to do with all your stuff!?—coming soon to an inbox near you!

RENEWING? Thanks for renewing your lease! We look forward to accommodating you again. Let us know if your home is in need of maintenance before the fall semester resumes. You may also disregard the following move-out procedures.

ALREADY MOVED OUT? Please call our office at 812-339-2859. We’d love to inspect your home earlier than anticipated if you’re no longer residing within your unit. Most importantly, do not disconnect utilities. Please contact us to discuss an appropriate date to discontinue utility services.

MOVING? Thanks so much for renting from Elkins Apartments. We hope you’ve had an enjoyable stay here and wish you luck in the future! Please call our office at 812-339-2859 to schedule your move-out inspection. Refer to our checklist below between now and your inspection to save as much of your security deposit as possible.

If you are graduating or moving, here’s some key move-out information to make that transition successful. You may wish to reread your lease as well.

  • RENT & UTILITIES: Even if you move out before your lease expires, please stay in touch with your roommates/sublessees to ensure your rent is paid on time. You will still be held responsible for your apartment and utilities must remain on until the lease term ends AND you have given us 3 days notice that they will be turned off. Check your tenant portal anytime.
  • CLEAN UP & MOVE OUT: Arrange cleaning and painting with roommates/sublessees at the end of your lease term. Tenants are not obligated to repaint, repair and/or clean, but if you are able to do a good job, you’ll save more of your security deposit from these service fees after inspection. All work must be completed prior to the move-out inspection. Whatever necessary work will be completed at a charge to you after move-out.
  • LEASE EXPIRATION DATE: Your lease ends at noon on your lease expiration date (this varies by lease, and is on your lease, and in your tenant account!). Anything left in your home after your lease expires will be deemed abandoned.
  • INSPECTION: Tenants are responsible for scheduling a move-out inspection 72 hours prior to move-out or before the lease expiration date, whichever is first. You do not need to be present during the inspection; however, do not forget to return your mail/unit keys and garage door openers (if applicable).
  • DEPOSIT: Deposits will be refunded after all work to return the unit to leasable condition is completed and billed, and the water/sewer bills (if any) are paid in full and a paid receipt of the final bill is provided to the office. This should happen no later than 45 days after lease expiration.
WarningIf your home will be unoccupied prior to your move out date, please inform us immediately. DO NOT disconnect the utilities. Please call us to discuss an alternate inspection date if you wish to leave Bloomington earlier.

If you have any questions, please call us at 812-339-2859.  Stay tuned to your inbox, as we will have at least two more informational emails that are crucial to your security deposit. Have a great summer!

Thanks again for choosing to live with us, and let us know if there is anything we can do to help!

Sincerely,

Elkins Apartments
